Review: Retro-Bit Genesis Controller

Last year, Retro-Bit announced a partnership with Sega to produce officially licensed Genesis (Megadrive), Saturn, and Dreamcast peripherals.  It took a while, but the local game store I frequent finally ordered some of the Genesis controllers.  If you're in the Minneapolis area, go check out Gamerheadz in the Southdale Mall.  Great shop!

I'm still floored that they got Sega to sign off on using the old Genesis packaging.  So cool!

I love that the back of the box now includes Spanish and French, something I don't think they had back then.  The cardboard box feels pretty sturdy, which is nice when it comes to shipping these things.

But then you pull it out, and you see it for all its beauty!  Retro-Bit has two variations: the clear blue shown above, and classic black.  Both are available with original Genesis connections as well as USB for PC gameplay!  This one's a Genesis, as that's what I needed the most.

The 10 foot (3.3m) cable on this controller is significantly longer than the original controllers.  Which is great, because that's one of those things that was a perennial problem with the Genesis.  You had to sit close to even be able to use the controller in the first place.  Somebody at Retro-Bit was smart on this one!

The casing of the controller feels cheap.  Something about the plastic they use doesn't feel right. That said, these buttons are SEXY!  There's just the right amount of push, they feel responsive, I LOVE IT! Aside from the controller housing, it feels like I just opened up a 25-year-old controller, brand spanking new.  I'm definitely buying a couple Saturn controllers and padhacking them into fight sticks for my fighting games.  If you can do that, you totally should!  There's so much awesome going on here!

Most places are selling these for around $15-$17 USD, and it's definitely worth every penny of that.  If you're in the market for replacement controllers for your Genesis, definitely go buy the Retro-Bit Controllers.  Click this link to buy one from Amazon and help support me in the process!
